Why this page exists
Anyone procuring screening software usually deals with vendors whose materials contain not one single limitation. That makes evaluation considerably harder, because the real work — finding out what the product cannot do — falls entirely on the buyer. We do that part for you. The limitations below are complete as far as we know them; if you find one that is missing, tell us and we will add it.

Breadth in a single job
Live search, a 36-month archive and sanctions matching run together and are deduplicated. You are not operating three tools side by side and reconciling their output by hand.
Country logic that actually bites
The right search domain, language and region per country — and, where press freedom is constrained, an additional international lane automatically. For cases outside the German-speaking market this is the single largest quality difference.
Reproducible name resolution
Variants come from a curated set. Two runs of the same request produce the same search — the precondition for being able to defend a result at all.
Audit-ready output
Four risk dimensions with scores and rationales, a relevance finding, source, date, disclosed paywall truncation, and the documented search run. The result is fileable without anyone reworking it.
Confidentiality of the question itself
Blind-signed tokens separate the query from your identity. For screening around acquisitions, prospective relationships or internal suspicions, that is a value in its own right.
Integration effort close to zero
One HTTP call with one extra header. No SDK, no crypto library in the production path, no dependency your IT has to maintain indefinitely.
Honest failure behaviour
Unanswerable jobs are reported as failed and cost nothing from your allowance, instead of passing as an unremarkable empty result.
Operated within a European framework
Deployment in the EU or in your own data centre, onboarding via issued client certificates, no dependency on a portal login.

Decision support, not a decision
Article analysis is produced by a language model. It is tightly constrained and may use only what the text contains — but it can misweight a formulation, miss a negation, or attribute an involvement incorrectly. Every hit belongs in front of human eyes, and the final judgement stays with you. If you are looking for fully automated clearance without review, this is the wrong product.
Sanctions lists: EU, OFAC and CSL — and nothing beyond them
Matching covers the EU consolidated list, the OFAC SDN list and the US Consolidated Screening List, which adds the BIS Entity and Denied Persons lists, ITAR debarment and the non-SDN Treasury lists. Not included are UN, UK HMT and SECO, among others. Anyone who needs complete list coverage needs a specialised list provider alongside — NegativeNewsSearch does not replace one.
No PEP screening, no ownership structures, no ongoing monitoring
There is no PEP database, no beneficial ownership resolution, no group structure analysis, and no continuous monitoring of a portfolio with alerts on new developments. This is an adverse media product, not a complete KYC suite. It sits alongside your existing tools; it does not replace them.
Output languages: English and German
Article analyses and the overall assessment are written in English or German, chosen per query — directly from the source article, not translated from another language. For English- and German-language files that is enough; anyone who has to file reports in French, Spanish or Polish cannot today. We add languages on request, but review them properly first — we do not ship an output language whose results we cannot read back.
The archive reaches back 36 months
GDELT holdings cover three years. Older matters are found only insofar as live search still surfaces them today. For facts further back, an archive research service is the more appropriate tool.
Runtime in minutes, not milliseconds
Full-text retrieval and per-article analysis take time; a screening runs in the order of minutes. The product is built for batch processing, onboarding review and case work — not for a real-time screen expecting an answer while a customer is being entered. The pure sanctions match is available as a separate synchronous call and is fast enough for that.
Coverage is index coverage
What appears neither in the search engine nor in the GDELT holdings will not be found by NegativeNewsSearch either. Print-only local press, closed forums, unindexed registers and reporting that has been taken offline lie beyond reach. That is true of every screening product on the market — it is just rarely stated.
Paywalls stay paywalls
Two cases, and both are stated rather than hidden. An article that can be read but looks truncated is assessed and expressly flagged as possibly incomplete. An article that cannot be read at all — a hard paywall, a bot wall, a PDF — is not silently dropped: it is listed with its link and the reason it could not be read, so it can be reviewed by hand. That matters because the overall score is a maximum, so an article nobody assessed can only have pulled it down, and paywalls sit hardest on investigative reporting. None of this makes the text any more readable to us — it only means you are told which sources the assessment does not cover.
False positives cost review time
Alias expansion deliberately increases the hit count, and sanctions matching is fuzzy. Both are intentional, because a missed hit is more expensive than one that has to be reviewed. The consequence is still real work: the per-article relevance section exists to keep that review short, but it does not do it for you.
We are a small vendor
Not a group with a legal department per continent, and not a three-figure reference list. If your procurement requires a vendor of that scale, it is worth establishing early. What you get instead is direct access to the people who built the system.

- You have to document adverse media as a distinct review step, and today that evidence consists of screenshots.
- Your portfolio includes international counterparties, particularly in countries with a difficult press situation.
- You screen names where the screening itself is confidential.
- You want the screening embedded in an existing application or workflow rather than operating yet another portal.
- Your team works in German or English.
A poor fit if …
- You are looking for a complete KYC suite with PEP lists, ownership structures and ongoing monitoring.
- You need an answer within seconds inside a data entry screen.
- Your files are kept in a language other than German or English.
- You need full sanctions list coverage beyond EU, OFAC and the CSL — UN, UK HMT or SECO.
- You expect automated clearance without human review.
